Acids release hydrogen ions in water, which makes them useful for adjusting pH, cleaning and descaling, etching and pickling metal, and driving many chemical reactions. Mineral acids such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric and phosphoric acid are strong and made in very large volumes, while organic acids such as acetic, citric, formic and oxalic acid are weaker and often used in cleaning, food processing and chemical synthesis.

Grades and forms

Acids are supplied as water solutions at a stated strength (for example 31% hydrochloric acid or 93% sulfuric acid) or, for the weaker organic acids, as crystals and powders. Typical grades are technical, and for some products food or other higher-purity grades. Tell us the acid, strength, grade and package you need and we will confirm what is available.

Packaging and delivery

Depending on the product and quantity, acids can be supplied in pails, drums, totes (IBCs), bulk truck or rail, and dry acids in bags or supersacks. Corrosive materials ship as regulated hazardous cargo, so we confirm packaging and freight with you on every quote. NTC ships to customers across the United States and internationally, and lead time and freight are confirmed on each quote.

Acids FAQ

What is the difference between a mineral acid and an organic acid?

Mineral acids such as sulfuric and hydrochloric acid are strong and fully dissociate in water. Organic acids such as acetic and citric acid are weaker and are often chosen where a gentler or more selective acid is needed.

Which acid concentration should I order?

It depends on your process and how you dilute it. Send the strength you use now, the application and your volume, and we will match the product or suggest an alternative.

How should acids be stored and handled?

Follow the Safety Data Sheet for the product: compatible tanks and piping, ventilation, protective equipment and separation from bases and oxidizers. Ask us for the SDS when you request a quote.

How is pricing set?
