Chelants, or chelating agents, bind metal ions such as calcium, magnesium and iron at several points to form stable, water-soluble complexes. This controls water hardness and stops metals from causing scale, discoloration or unwanted reactions. Aminocarboxylates such as EDTA, DTPA, HEDTA, NTA and MGDA are used in cleaners, water treatment, pulp and paper, textiles and personal care.
