Toll blending is a service in which a contract blender mixes, processes and packages a product for you, following your formula and specification. You keep control of the recipe and the brand; the blender provides the equipment, space and labor.
How toll blending works
- You share the formulation and specification: ingredients, ratios, mixing instructions and quality requirements.
- Materials are sourced: either you supply the raw materials, or the blender buys them for you.
- The product is blended: liquids and powders are combined according to your instructions.
- The product is packaged: into drums, totes, pails, bags or bulk, as agreed.
- It is shipped: to your site or your customers.
Toll blending vs. toll manufacturing
The terms overlap. Toll blending usually means mixing and packaging, while toll manufacturing can also cover other processing steps. See our toll blending and toll manufacturing page for what we offer.
When it makes sense
- You want to launch or grow a product without building a plant.
- Your own capacity is full or you need a second source.
- Your volumes do not justify blending equipment.
- You want to simplify buying many raw materials. NTC can also handle sourcing and supply chain management for the ingredients.
What to prepare before you ask for a quote
- The formulation and the specification, including the tests you expect.
- Batch size and how often you will order.
- Packaging type and any labeling needs.
- Safety Data Sheets for each ingredient.
- Where the finished product should be delivered.
Questions to settle up front
- Who supplies each raw material?
- Who owns the formula and any records?
- What happens if a batch does not meet the specification?
- How are samples and quality checks handled?
NTC offers custom chemical blending for liquid and powder products, shipped across the US and abroad.
A typical toll blending project
A typical project starts with a conversation about the product. The customer explains what the blend is for, shares the formulation and tells the blender how much they expect to order. The blender reviews whether it can run the process and what testing is needed to release a batch. Next comes a trial batch, which confirms that the procedure works at the larger scale and lets both sides agree on the test results that define an acceptable product. Once the trial is approved, production batches follow the same written procedure, with records kept for each batch. Finished product is packaged and labeled as agreed and shipped to the customer or to the customer's own customers. Throughout, the formulation stays confidential under the agreement signed at the start. If the process changes, such as a new supplier for an ingredient, both sides review the change before it goes into production. NTC offers toll blending and quotes each project individually, because the cost depends on the materials, batch size and packaging.
